  • Finally…a laminate that actually utilizes ‘proven’ tonewoods! The outer layers of ‘most’ laminate guitars are little more than very thin veneers and mechanically should not impact the overall voice in a significant way. The general consensus is that the typical laminate back and side guitars, while they certainly can be fine sounding instruments, are not going to reflect the exposed tonewood sound qualities, and the different finish veneer (RW,HOG, Sapele, etc.) voices will only vary as a result of ‘individual’ characteristics of the particular instrument’s build personality. At least with this design, we know what to ‘typically’ expect from hog as a tonewood, and my presumption is that, depending on the laminate glues and construction techniques, this model will likely voice very much like a mahogany solid, assuming the core material is not just ‘scrap’; a lot of tonewoods, while being perfectly fine for their voicing qualities are aesthetically unacceptable. The bonus of the arched back can have profound impact on the projection and volume available on demand, not to mention a tonal qualitative value (e.g., Taylors’ 100, 200 and Mini series) ; the additional quality step of torrefaction is a phenomenal value built into the equation. I am making a lot of assumptions, as firstly I have no prior knowledge of the company (thank you AG for your Namm updates) but my research turns up positive feedback; additionally, I have no research to back up my perceptions regarding the use of a known tonewood for a central core; to my knowledge the most common center ply is Poplar, a hardwood, but a relatively soft one; and frankly, who knows what the manufacturer uses unless they take the bold step to spec it out as has been done with this new release. I look forward to a local dealer bringing these in and being able to have a hands on experience; in the meantime, I will continue to follow the reviews and forum feedback from those who have the opportunity play and hopefully confirm my high expectation for this new innovative entry at what at first blush looks to be a potentially fantastic value!
