SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA — Cort Guitars‘ vision of the modern acoustic-electric takes an exotic turn with the new SFX-Myrtlewood. The all-myrtlewood body is a series standout, ranging in color from blonde-yellow to taupe, so no two sets look alike and each guitar is an original. Offering an arched back for improved resonance, a V-shape neck profile, and Fishman electronics, the SFX-Myrtlewood is designed for the modern player who isn’t bound to tradition.
Like other models in the SFX Series, the SFX-Myrtlewood prioritizes playing comfort, offering a unique slim body shape with a comfortable Venetian cutaway and jumbo frets (25.3-inch scale). The arched back compensates for the shallower depth to provide a bigger and more open sound. This design works well for the Oregon Myrtle, also known as California Bay Laurel or Pepperwood, which is tonally similar to maple with clear, bright projection, but easier to bend. Cort applies its Aged to Vintage (ATV) torrefaction process to the solid Myrtlewood top, giving this guitar the big, open tone of a decades-old acoustic. Inside, the advanced scalloped X-bracing frees up top vibration. Outside, the sonically enhanced UV finish, available in Natural or Brown Gloss, provides strength and scratch resistance, while its light weight improves the natural acoustic resonance for full-bodied, rich tone.
Sophistication meets simplicity in the SFX-Myrtlewood’s electronics. The Fishman Presys II preamp offers 2-band equalization, a built-in tuner, a Phase switch for effective tone shaping, and noiseless operation during live performances. The preamp is paired with a Fishman Sonitone acoustic guitar pickup, an undersaddle piezo in the bridge position with controls for volume and tone. This discrete combination provides just what the performer needs, without detracting from the guitar’s natural beauty and sound.
Beyond the dovetail neck joint, the SFX-Myrtlewood adds the strength and dynamics of a mahogany neck and ovangkol fretboard, which corresponds to the ovangkol bridge. The 20 jumbo frets on the Cort’s exclusive V-shape neck facilitate high-speed soloing, especially in the high register near the cutaway. The standard 1 11/16-inch nut width provides a familiar feel, and die-cast tuners with black knobs top it off with excellent tuning stability and rock-solid functionality.
