Elektron has launched Outbox 8, an eight-channel audio/CV breakout box that lets users route individual tracks to external hardware and control modular instruments through MIDI-to-CV conversion. The unit adds eight configurable physical outputs to a connected device, with audio and control voltage available in combinations supported by that device.
The Swedish musical instrument manufacturer has announced pricing of €299, $349, £259 and SEK 3,299. Outbox 8 is available through Elektron’s website and retailers carrying its products.
Individual Audio Outputs and MIDI-to-CV Conversion
Outbox 8 allows individual audio tracks to be sent to mixers, effects processors and other external equipment. This supports separate processing and mixing of tracks in studio sessions or live performances.
Outputs can also be assigned to control voltage duties, including pitch, gate, trigger, linear value and clock. Used as a dedicated USB MIDI-to-CV converter, the unit can play, sequence, modulate and synchronize modular systems and other CV-capable instruments.
A connected MIDI controller can also provide direct control of compatible instruments, bringing keyboard playing and performance gestures into a modular setup. Audio routing and CV functions can be combined within the capabilities of the connected equipment.
Eight-Output USB Audio for Computers and Mobile Devices
Connected to a compatible computer, tablet or phone, Elektron Outbox 8 works as an eight-output USB audio interface. Users can route audio from a digital audio workstation to monitors, mixers or external hardware.
At the same time, MIDI from the DAW can be converted into CV through outputs configured for that purpose. This allows a computer-based setup to sequence modular equipment, control analog synthesizers and synchronize external devices alongside audio playback.
In-Device Configuration or Web App Setup
Many Elektron instruments support Outbox 8 configuration directly on the connected instrument. For other devices, including non-Elektron USB class-compliant equipment, configuration is available through the Outbox 8 Web App.
Compatibility depends on the manufacturer and firmware of the connected device. Many devices support MIDI, while some support audio or both audio and MIDI. Users should check the compatibility matrix on the official Elektron Outbox 8 product page for device-specific support and setup requirements.
